Counselling
for
Type 1 Diabetes

Living with more than diabetes.

I have lived with Type 1 diabetes for over 30 years, so my understanding of its demands isn't only professional. I know first-hand what it is to live with a condition that needs your attention every day.

Type 1 diabetes is often described in terms of numbers like: blood glucose levels, insulin doses, ratios, carbohydrate values and technology. Yet anyone living with it knows there is much more to manage than the condition itself.

The constant decision-making. The unpredictability. The impact on work, relationships, sleep, confidence and everyday life. The pressure of always needing to think ahead, even when you're exhausted.

T1D is always present, even when no one else can see it.

Counselling offers a space to explore the emotional and psychological impact of living with T1D, alongside whatever else life may be bringing.

How I work

As an integrative counsellor, I work with you as a whole person, not simply someone living with Type 1 diabetes.

While diabetes may be part of our conversations, it doesn't have to be the whole story. Together we can explore both the emotional impact of the condition and whatever else is important in your life.

What might we explore?

Every person's experience is different, but counselling may help with:

  • Diabetes burnout, overwhelm and the ongoing demands of managing T1D

  • Anxiety, including fear of hypos, hypers or long-term complications

  • The emotional impact of diagnosis, whether recent or many years ago

  • Relationships with partners, family or friends

  • Work, study and decisions about sharing your diagnosis with others

  • Frustration, anger, guilt or low mood

  • Confidence, identity and life beyond diabetes
